Project Location and Field

A total of 375 acres of land located in the south of the area where SASA's current production plants are located in Seyhan, Adana. The entire area consists of registered lands in the name of SASA Polyester Sanayi A.Ş.

USD 1,72 billion.

Project Target

The project aims to meet the PTA needs of SASA arising from both its existing facilities and the capacity increase that will arise from its ongoing and planned investments. With the production of PTA within the company, which is currently supplied through import; SASA will be in a position to produce its own raw materials, its foreign dependency will decrease, and the targeted vertical integration will be achieved.

25% capital, 75% debt
ECA credit with 10-year maturity and 2-year grace period, and other investment loans with 7-9 years maturity

Commissioning Date

The construction, mechanical assembly, commissioning and trial production phases—conducted with the participation of more than 150 companies and 40 million man-hours of work—have been completed. As of March 3, 2025, our plant has commenced commercial production.

- The Fire Water System, one of the auxiliary units of the plant, was completed as of September 2023.

- The Cooling Tower, Instrument and Plant Air Facility, and Nitrogen Production and Storage Facility were completed as of October 2023.

- Demineralized Water and Storage Facility was completed as of December 2023.

- Laboratory equipment installation and testing has started as of December 2023.

- Electrical Substation and Control Room was activated as of December 2023.

- Administrative Building was activated as of December 2023.

- As of February 2024, commissioning works have begun for HP Steam Boiler and Fuel Gas System Units.

- As of February 2024, the purchasing and storage of Paraxylene, the raw material of PTA, has been started.

- Laboratory was activated as of February 2024.

- Steam Generation and Gas Combustion Unit was completed in March 2024.

- In April 2024, commissioning works have been commenced for Wastewater Treatment Unit (ETP–WWTP Facilities).

- Compressor and Tribune Units, which will provide air to the PTA Production Facility and will also generate electricity by using the heat generated by the exothermic reaction in the oxidation unit, commissioning works commenced in May 2024.

- Wastewater Treatment Unit was completed as of June 2024.

- Maintenance Facilities were completed as of June 2024.

- As of June 2024, commissioning works have begun for Raw Water Storage and Pumping Facility.

- As of June 2024, commissioning works have begun for Paraxylene Storage Tanks.

- Hydrogen Production Unit installation works have been completed.

- Paraxylene Storage Tanks was completed as of August 2024.

- PTA Loading (Silo) and Bagging System installation has been completed.

- Hydrogen Production Facility was commissioned as of August 2024.

- PTA Loading and Bagging System was commissioned as of August 2024.

- Raw Water Storage and Pumping Facility was commissioned as of September 2024.

- Auxiliary Chemical Storage Tanks were commissioned as of September 2024.

- Raw Material Truck Unloading Facility was commissioned as of September 2024.

- All auxiliary facilities required for PTA production have been put into operation and the PTA Production Plant has been made available for feeding as of September 2024.

- The compliance checks and tests of the licensor company began at the project site in August 2024.

- As of December 2024; the procurement of raw materials required for the production phase has been completed, the production tests have started, and initial test outputs have been obtained.
- The plant started commercial production as of March 2025.

PTA - In General

What is PTA?

Pure Terephthalic Acid (PTA) is a petrochemical product used as a raw material in the production of various polyester products (polyester fiber and yarn, PET bottles, films, etc.). It is the main raw material of polyester.

Production Technology

PTA is produced as a solid-crystalline-white powder by oxidation of paraxylene (PX) under the influence of pressure, temperature and catalysts. Although there are differences in the process in different technologies, the main process is based on the oxidation of paraxylene obtained from naphtha and the purification of the resulting crude terephthalic acid (CTA).

Global PTA Production Capacity

109 million tons/year (as of 2023)
80% of the plants producing PTA in the world are in the Far East, especially in China. It is expected that old production plants (those up to 700-800 ktons/year) will be closed due to low efficiency and high costs in the next 2-3 years.

Contribution Expected

Raw Material Supply Certainty

With the introduction of SASA's investments in Adana Seyhan, the PTA requirement is expected to be 1,750,000 tons/year. Therefore, it is aimed to consume all the PTA production for the company's own polyester production.

Contribution to Turnover

During the period until the ongoing investments are put into operation, surplus PTA may be sold.

Raw Material Cost Advantage

11% cost advantage (due to the spread between PTA-PX and the difference between PTA and PX freight costs)

Employment Contribution

Number of employees working in the construction of PTA Production Plant: 5,000 people

Number of employees to work for the operation: 430 people

Number of operating employees already started to work: 230 people

Energy Contribution

1,360,785 GJ of electricity needed by the plant will be produced by utilizing the off-gas resulting from the exothermic reaction during production. In this way, all the electricity needs of the plant will be met by its own systems without being dependent on external sources.

Environment Contribution

Thanks to Invista technology, energy production from off-gas will produce 65% less greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional PTA plants.
